We are Lightning! We are AWESOME!!

Art Smith Aviation Academy (ASAA) is nestled within the heart of 4 Wing Cold Lake, Canada’s largest fighter base.  The roar of overhead jets provides the perfect inspirational tone for the complete aviation learning experience.  The Academy is an 'alternative program school' within Northern Lights Public Schools. We provide a K to 9 program in English and K to 6 French Immersion program to all families in the Cold Lake area. The school also takes pride in being able to focus on the specialized needs of military dependents while supporting students of the area surrounding 4 Wing Cold Lake.

Members of the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defence lend a collective hand to the aviation program of the ASAA.  As positive role models for the students who attend the academy, the aviators and support members of the defence team provide the benefit of their experience, training and knowledge to ASAA’s students.

Art Smith Aviation Academy is also partnered with the  Military Families Support Society (MFSS).  The MFSS is composed of five members, all of whom share an interest in education and experience in aviation.  The MFSS is a registered society responsible for the lease of our building and advising as a key stakeholder of the academy.  The society also is responsible for the financial viability of the academy and accepts donations, which are crucial for operating the ASAA, the only school of its kind in Canada.

Art Smith Aviation Academy is named after a Second World War pilot who flew Spitfires in his youth and went on to become an avid member of our Province’s aerospace industry.  He was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and also served his country as a Member of Parliament and a Member of the Legislative Assembly.  Art Smith also served as the Honorary Colonel of 4 Wing Cold Lake until his passing at the age of 89.  Art Smith is a worthy Albertan for students to emulate.
